Built in the 13th century on a rocky headland by the Goyon- Matignon family, the castle proudly juts out into the sea. Two drawbridges enable to walk over the rifts that separate it from the coast. Year after year, because of its strategic position, the fortress has experienced many vicissitudes. In 1379, it was besieged by Du Guesclin. |
|
During the disturbances of the league period, the buildings were partly damaged by fire. Only the donjon has held out against all those assaults. Louis XIVth has felt great interest in the castle, though greatly damaged. Garangeau was entrusted with the transformation of the buildings into a fortress. Ever since then, the castle was to be preserved. |

Many repairings have achieved, the chapel was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century and the cannon-ball kiln was built in 1793. In the 19th century, Fort-La-Latte was progressively deserted, the wath-man was the only representative of the garrison. It was abandoned in 1890, then sold two years later. A new fall was starting. The Castle of Fort-la Latte is legaly protected and is open for visits only . |
