For several years now, the Hermione-La Fayette Association has been working on a tremendous project - rebuilding the frigate Hermione in which La Fayette (Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch-Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette) sailed to America in 1780 to help the colonists fighting against the British in the American War of Independence. |
The actual building of the frigate began in February 1997, in a vast marking-out hall 25 metres long by 12 metres wide. Asselin's shipwrights spent three months marking out the working drawing on a scale of 1:1, then built the templates of the various parts. |
The construction site is organised into two work places - a workshop under canvas, where all the wood is cut up and machined, and a vast tarpaulin-covered structure covering the front part of the building berth where the warship is gradually taking shape. Aventuriers' comment : you have to see it ! Incredible. A dream is to become true. People are working days and nights to make it real. |
